Nine Principles of Good Practice for Assessing Student Learning

In a nutshell, the nine principles boil down to using assessment continuously, to make it a part of the process of learning, to use it to both plan learning and evaluate it later, to make it part of the organizations planning, goals, and self-evaluation.

As a teacher, I already practice and continue to strive for continuous assessment.  I have rubrics I utilize to identify improvement, and I use them to help me track student improvement in key writing skills over time, for example.  Unlike some teachers who have only a few grades in their gradebook, I have several “grades” every week, so that I, my students, and their parents can pinpoint growth and areas for improvement.  Student work is also assessment, as much as possible, so that both are intertwined.  I think my weakness is in coordinating with other teachers in my school, so that our assessments are meaningful across the curriculum.
